Marble Maiden , c.1890 (SOLD)
A 19TH CENTURY WHITE MARBLE FIGURE OF A MAIDEN, CIRCA 1890
EL von Weber, A marble model of a maiden with a hydria, late 19th century, portrayed as standing, her hair tied up and falling down her neck, with nude torso and draped from the waist, leaning forwards, her weight on her right leg; the integrally modelled base inscribed EL v Weber, top a later rectangular white marble socle.
Von Weber seems to be something of an enigmatic figure, Certainly he was of German heritage and working in London in the late 19th century, he studied small scale sculpture at the Vienna Academy in 1855 - 1856.
The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery in Bournemouth holds one work by the artist of a similar subject and size and two life-size figures are held at the Liverpool national museum, his only auction record found is with Christies for a larger marble figure group - see, Christie’s London, Nineteenth Century Furniture & Works of Art, 29th February 1996, lot 406.
