Santos, c.1770 (SOLD)
18TH CENTURY CARVED WOODEN SANTOS CAGE DOLL, SPAIN, CIRCA 1770.
Santos figures date back centuries, they have a rich history. Santos is the Spanish word for saint and these dolls were first used in the most rural of areas where villagers had no priests. They were used to create makeshift alters in homes. Later, they were used to form dramatic processions in churches. Traditionally, they would have been part clothed which explains why some parts are painted and others not.
This example is exceptionally well executed in both carving and decoration.
